But, looks like his parole date has been moved up a couple years to 2021.

Hi Stephanie,
No, I didn’t write a book about this story, but I did this blog post. Amy was my sister’s best friend, and her murder is an early memory of mine. He’s in prison (jail is for short sentences/awaiting trial). I don’t think he will ever get out. I hope not anyway.

Thanks for commenting!

I know u posted this years ago but I just now saw it. Did u write a book about this? I’m from Greenwood, grew up there and I remember this happening even though I was younger than Amy Jo I had friends who had older siblings who were friends with her and she would often come over to my neighborhood to visit them. She was such a pretty girl and so nice, and yes I remember her listening to Prince with one of my neighbors Dawn Harris. Why isn’t Monday in Johnson County jail? Where is he? I have visited Amy Jo’s grave several times with friends in Greenwood. Thank u for sharing this sad story.

Graduated from Greenwood in 1987. Some artistic license was, I beleive, used in saying everyone trusted Gary Monday. I found him to have less emotional maturity than most his/our age at the time He had some anger issues that were pretty obvious to me and I didn’t run in his circle. Truly a tragedy. She was a lovely girl. I didn’t really know her, but she gave me that impression from my limited interactions.

Everything your sister says about her is true. I was new to the neighborhood and awkward. She welcomed me in and instantly became a wonderful friend. I didn’t see her much after the divorce but when I did, she picked up right where we left off and would just talk forever about everything. I miss her to this day.

I had been out of college for just a year when this happened.

Whenever I drive near where her body was found, I think of Amy Jo Harris. I think of her when I leave my teenage daughter at home alone or when she leaves alone for volleyball. I have never forgotten Amy, though I had never met her.

She’d have been 45 now. I was outside the Greenwood police station, heading to my car, when the dad drove his son, the killer, past in their pickup truck to the front door to either turn himself in, or maybe it was for questioning. (My thoughts now are how his dad must have felt, and I felt so sorry for him.) I always wondered where Monday ended up.

That was one of the worst months of my life. I saw my college girlfriend for the last time after I tried a last-ditch attempt to reconcile, the Challenger Shuttle blew up and a teenage girl was murdered and raped by a classmate. Just a God-awful month, but it certainly left a big impact, personally, locally and nationally.

What made it even worse for me was I was with her before she married him, he brought life insurance policies to her to sign 2 weeks before they wed, I had a weird feeling about it, thought you’d wait until after the wedding to do all that, even mentioned that to her. After her death, he had most people fooled for along time, even lived with her parents for a time, I knew from the start that he did it. It made me trust my gut, only one other time I had that feeling, when my nephew was deployed to Afghanistan, I knew he wouldn’t be back, that horrible day still makes me sick when I think of it. My only comfort is knowing they are both in heaven. Thank you for sharing your story, I pray for peace for all.

I was born in 1956 I lived Greenwood until i was 20 then off and on until 2000 . I remember hearing a bought the girl who was killed by the stalker in the dry cleaners by the Dog-n-suds when I was a little in 86 I had two children this story terrified me my daughter was 9 then. As a child I walked to Northern Park ( from my house in the manner by Lotus Garden) and spent most my time with people I went to school with . We walked every place camped out side in our back yards played in the corn feild behind our house watched the movies at the drive in from my back yard and never worried. Now I know why my parents had to have the phone number and address of who ever we stayed the night with and would talk to make sure they were going to be home and staying the night was OK ! I never realized how closed they kept an eye on us or why until I was grown with my own children to protect. I lived in Northern Park when Mr.& Mrs Georges were murdered ( Mrs. Gorges was my first grade teacher at southwest) Greenwood has had its share of tragedy. I hope everyone who was touched by the loss of friends ,teachers, children have managed to find comfort . The memories of these events will remain with us .

Amy is missed, and none of could believe this happened to her, I lived in the trailer court and a few of us there just sat together upset and in shock that this happened to her. I have a friend that was best friends with Amy that still celebrates Amy’s birthday every year. April 12th. I have a picture of her from middle school in my senior memory book along with some newspaper clippings on what happened. Such a tragic story about a sweet girl. Gary should never be released, and it is killing me knowing that he will be able to get out and live life when Amy will not. Just does not seem fair
