Row80 Check-In: Start and Stop

Today’s check in will be short and sweet:

Thriller Thursday is ready to go for tomorrow’s post.

I’ve managed to write just under 2500 words on The Prophet. And then I discovered an issue with scene continuity that I need to work on before going any further. I plotted this book out in much more detail than I have with others, but I’m still learning, so I’ve got a few kinks (read: scene rewrites) before going further.

Today isn’t allowing for much writing as I’ve got a little one who loves to talk:) I hope to get some more work done tonight, but tomorrow is busy and then my bestie will be here for a visit, so I may not have much to report on Sunday.

I have ordered K.M. Weilend’s Outlining Your Novel. I’ve heard some great things about it, and I’d like to nail down my issues before going much further on The Prophet.

How’s your week going? I’ve seen some awesome word counts on the #row80 hashtag. Keep it up!

  1. Prep work doesn’t fix everything, but it really does make clean up much easier, because you can concentrate on a few more important things, and usually fix it in one go.

Good luck finding more time tonight.

  2. I have K.M.’s book in preparation for a fiction project I’ll do after revisions. I look forward to a report on how that helps. Enjoy your bestie.

  3. ugh, continuity… I don’t mind it in a first draft, but I stuffed it during the rewrite of my first manuscript and it derailed me to a near fatal status… one day I’ll get back to it…

  4. I’d like to hear what you think of the book, too. I’ve never heard of that one, and I’m pretty much a writing craft book junkie. How did I miss it? Have fun with your bestie this weekend!

    • Thanks. It was recommended to me by a fellow writer, and so far I’m impressed. Haven’t gotten past the first chapter yet, but I hope to finish the book by the end of next week. Thanks, I will!

  5. Woot woot Stacy! Great week so far and I think stopping and getting the plot things fixed now will only save you time down the road. I read KM’s book and really enjoyed it. It was a little early for me (not having a real idea and plot semi developed) so some of it was lost on me but I suspect you’ll get a ton out of it! I’m nearly done Plot and Structure by James Scott Bell and am 1/2 way through Save the Cat – both offering fantastic plotting guidelines and ideas as well.

    • Thanks! I think it will, too. I just thought I’d already done that, so it’s a bit frustrating, but I guess I’m learning this plotting thing as I go. So glad to hear your thoughts on the book – looking forward to learning from it.

  6. Great job, Stacy! I do think calling it “kinks” make it all sound so manageable. (Then again, having tried to get a kink of a slinky for my kids, it’s not always easy.) I hope you follow up here about the outlining book. I’d love to know what you think. Have a great week!

    • LOL. I hope so. This plot is really intricate, which is something I’m proud of. BUT, it’s taking a lot more “unkinking” than I expected. Oh well, live and learn. And I definitely will follow up on the book.

      Thank you!

    • Yes, we are. It’s a bit frustrating, but I guess as long as we’re seeing progress, we can’t complain. Thanks!
